Garlic's Ancient History

Garlic is a member of the Lily family, which includes onions, shallots, chives, and leeks. Along with many other plants, all garlics share the genus Allium.

Throughout history, the daily use of garlic has been deeply embedded in many different cultures. Garlic's medicinal uses are detailed in almost all medicinal writing from the ancient world, as well as in many biblical references. Most agree that garlic originated in the Middle East, and has been cultivated long before written record keeping. Moreover, Allium sativum was highly regarded in ancient Egypt as a crucial and sacred herb. It has been said that even King Tut was buried with bulbs of garlic in his tomb!
